How does Steinbeck present the characte Dissertation

How will Steinbeck present the character Thieves in Of Mice and Men? To what extent do you sympathise with him being a character?

Steinbeck represents the smoothness, Crooks, by showing the effects of discrimination. He could be referred to as the ‘black' stable buck and is named Crooks, due to the crook in his backside, which was a direct result being kicked in the backside by a horses. The character is shown as reasonably literate, due to the own his literature, which he uses since compensation to his isolation. The reader may have a lot of sympathy for Crooks, as he is cared for unfairly and acts incredibly lonely, showing he does not have anyone to comfort and ease him also to talk about his problems to. The racism is carried out by most of the men on the ranch, as thieves is the just black person and racism was quite typical at the time of which will ‘Of Mice and Men' was set – 1930's. He is separated by his colour in addition to insulted with the aid of the word ‘nigger'. With this comment the men are dehumanising Crooks and it demonstrates that they do not keep a lot of respect pertaining to him. The discrimination is also stretched for an extent of him not being allowed to get into and socialise with the white-colored men, inside the bunk-house. Someone would sympathise greatly with this, while Crooks is being secluded coming from everyone. The unacceptance that he will get has led to him becoming incredibly lonely and need of company. This can be shown simply by his quotation – " s'pose you didn't have nobody. S'pose you could hardly go into the bunk house and play rummy ‘cause you were black…A guys needs somebody – to be near him…I tell you a guy gets too lonesome an' he he gets sick. ” His feeling of loneliness hard disks him to try out a inappropriate trick about Lennie, that might lead to the reader to reduce their sympathy towards Thieves, as he is taking advantage of Lennie and this implies that he is much less innocent as he may seem, even though he be acting like this because of his untrusting character, which was brought on by a lot of the men about him.
